Dyslexia Support

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a medical diagnosis characterized by difficulties with accurate and fluent word reading and spelling, despite normal intelligence and adequate instruction. While only a qualified medical professional can formally diagnose dyslexia, our district is able to identify characteristics commonly associated with dyslexia through screening and assessment. This helps us provide timely support and interventions for students who demonstrate these characteristics.

Our Commitment

In accordance with Indiana Code 20-35-5.7, our school is committed to:

  • Providing awareness about dyslexia to staff, students, and families.
  • Offering screening to K-2 students or students who may be at risk for dyslexic characteristics.
  • Implementing evidence-based interventions and support for students identified with dyslexia.
  • Ensuring teachers receive professional development related to dyslexia.

Screening and Identification

Our school screens students in K-2 to identify those who may be at risk for dyslexic characteristics. If a student shows signs of dyslexic characteristics, parents will be contacted, and additional assessments may be conducted.

Support and Intervention

Students identified with dyslexic characteristics will receive targeted support tailored to their individual needs. This may include specialized instruction focused on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies.
